Pilot program to test hydrogen fuel cell trucks aims to reduce logistics-related emissions in Japan.
Initial operations will serve Fujitsu Limited, with expansion to other customers planned later this year.
Initiative aligns with DHL’s 2030 target for 30% of transport to run on sustainable fuels.
DHL Supply Chain has launched a pilot program in Japan deploying hydrogen-powered fuel cell (FC) trucks, marking a milestone in its push toward decarbonized logistics. The initiative is part of a government-backed project promoting next-generation energy solutions for transportation.
Jerome Gillet, President & Representative Director, CEO Japan and Korea, DHL Supply Chain, said the move positions Japan as a regional leader within DHL: “We are very proud of becoming the first country in Asia Pacific at DHL Supply Chain to introduce hydrogen-powered FC trucks. This pilot aligns directly with DHL Group’s aspiration to be the Green Logistics of Choice, by taking a frontrunner role in deploying low and zero carbon transport solutions. By 2030, 30 percent of our air, maritime and road transport is aimed to run on sustainable fuels.”

The trucks generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen stored in high-pressure tanks and atmospheric oxygen in the fuel cell. With a range of about 260 kilometers, they offer both environmental benefits and commercial practicality. The pilot will begin with deliveries between Fujitsu Limited operations, with more trucks and routes to be added later in 2025.

Takashi Yamanishi, EVP and CSSO, Fujitsu Limited, emphasized the strategic fit: “We are committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain by 2040 as part of our long-term environmental strategy, the Fujitsu Climate & Energy Vision. We are pleased to explore the potential of hydrogen-powered transportation as a new energy solution through our collaboration with DHL Supply Chain Japan.”

The hydrogen truck program supports DHL Group’s Strategy 2030: Accelerating Sustainable Growth, with hydrogen recognized as a key growth sector alongside wind, solar, EVs, batteries, and alternative fuels.
Sachiko Kokue, ESG & Sustainability Head, DHL Supply Chain Japan, noted the broader implications: “The introduction of hydrogen trucks is an important breakthrough towards achieving decarbonization in the transportation sector. This pilot has been made possible with the support of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, who helped facilitate our involvement in this initiative led by the Japanese government and Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation (CJPT).”
DHL says it will continue investing in low-carbon technologies to help customers reduce supply chain emissions while maintaining operational efficiency.
