Deep Sky, a Montreal-based carbon removal project developer, has achieved a breakthrough in North America: the first underground CO₂ storage via Direct Air Capture (DAC). The milestone was reached at Deep Sky Alpha, Canada’s carbon removal commercialization hub in Innisfail, Alberta, using technology from Quebec-based Skyrenu.
Skyrenu’s DAC unit captured carbon directly from the atmosphere, and in partnership with Deep Sky, permanently stored it underground—completing the full carbon removal cycle for the first time on the continent.

The project underscores the role of Deep Sky Alpha as the world’s first cross-technology carbon removal center powered by solar energy. Skyrenu’s DAC unit, capable of removing 50 tonnes of CO₂ annually, was selected for its potential to achieve low-cost carbon capture. The facility is designed to fast-track the move from prototype to commercialization, enabling companies to validate, scale, and issue carbon removal credits in real-world conditions.

The success highlights the growing importance of homegrown, permanent, and verifiable carbon removal solutions as governments and corporations seek to meet net-zero commitments.
