Marks the first full carbon removal cycle using Canadian-developed DAC technology.

Demonstrates Quebec-based Skyrenu’s potential to deliver low-cost, scalable CO₂ capture.

Positions Canada as a leader in carbon removal commercialization and climate tech innovation.

Deep Sky, a Montreal-based carbon removal project developer, has achieved a breakthrough in North America: the first underground CO₂ storage via Direct Air Capture (DAC). The milestone was reached at Deep Sky Alpha, Canada’s carbon removal commercialization hub in Innisfail, Alberta, using technology from Quebec-based Skyrenu.

Skyrenu’s DAC unit captured carbon directly from the atmosphere, and in partnership with Deep Sky, permanently stored it underground—completing the full carbon removal cycle for the first time on the continent.

“We’re incredibly proud to lead the way as the first Quebec-based DAC technology to capture CO₂ for permanent storage in North America,” said Gabriel Vézina, Skyrenu CEO. “Our partnership with Deep Sky is a powerful example of how to accelerate DAC to climate-relevant scale. Together, we can deliver impactful projects faster, generate high-quality carbon removal, and set a new benchmark for the industry.”

The project underscores the role of Deep Sky Alpha as the world’s first cross-technology carbon removal center powered by solar energy. Skyrenu’s DAC unit, capable of removing 50 tonnes of CO₂ annually, was selected for its potential to achieve low-cost carbon capture. The facility is designed to fast-track the move from prototype to commercialization, enabling companies to validate, scale, and issue carbon removal credits in real-world conditions.

“This is exactly what Deep Sky Alpha was built for,” said Alex Petre, Deep Sky CEO. “A product of Sherbrooke University, Skyrenu’s achievement shows that Canadian climate tech can lead on a global stage and that carbon removal is ready to scale today.”

The success highlights the growing importance of homegrown, permanent, and verifiable carbon removal solutions as governments and corporations seek to meet net-zero commitments.
