2x Capture Efficiency: Climeworks’ Gen 3 DAC tech, powered by Svante’s structured adsorbents, doubles CO₂ capture compared to Gen 2.

50% Energy Reduction: Energy use slashed in half across 1,300+ real-world cycles.

Proven Durability: Stable performance in extreme humidity and temperature conditions, validating scalability.

Climeworks has completed large-scale testing of its Generation 3 Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, confirming a significant leap in efficiency. Powered by Svante’s structured adsorbents, the system doubles CO₂ capture capacity and cuts energy use in half compared to Climeworks’ current Gen 2 implementation in Iceland.

“Testing DAC technology at full scale and under real-world conditions is critical to validating performance and durability before large-scale deployment,” Climeworks stated.

The trial ran from May 2024 to January 2025 at Climeworks’ large-scale facility in Muttenz, Switzerland. Across 1,300+ operating cycles and varying environmental conditions—from sub-freezing to high humidity—the Gen 3 system consistently performed within ±5% of predictions.

The key innovation lies in Svante’s structured adsorbents, which enable faster CO₂ adsorption and desorption cycles with low air resistance—critical for reducing energy consumption while increasing capture throughput.

“Svante’s structure demonstrated mechanical stability and maintained high performance over time,” Climeworks noted.

In addition to performance, Svante’s materials offer a low-carbon manufacturing footprint and enhanced durability, further aligning with sustainability goals.

This milestone also marks progress toward a scalable DAC supply chain. Svante exemplifies a new generation of DAC-focused suppliers scaling alongside tech leaders like Climeworks.

“Long-term collaborations like this one help professionalize and structure the DAC supply chain,” the company said. “A crucial development for turning carbon removal into a mature, global industry.”
