Citroën C3 Aircross gets larger battery for more range

Following the Opel Frontera, Citroën has introduced a version with a larger battery to the closely related C3 Aircross lineup, offering approximately 100 kilometres of additional range. In Germany, the new battery costs just shy of €2,000 extra.

Citroën calls the new variant ë-C3 Aircross Extended-Range – a slightly surprising choice, as the electric version of the larger C5 Aircross went on sale in Germany last week as the C5 Aircross Electric, rather than ë-C5 Aircross. For the smaller C3 Aircross, the brand retains the existing model designation with the preceding “ë”.

According to Citroën, the ë-C3 Aircross Extended-Range features a 50 kWh battery, enabling a WLTP range of up to 400 kilometres. At first glance, this may seem unexpected, as sister brand Opel quotes a 54 kWh battery for the Frontera Electric Extended Range. However, Opel likely communicates the gross value while Citroën states the usable net capacity, since their range figures are virtually identical. The 54 kWh battery is presumably the LFP pack first offered in the updated Citroën ë-Berlingo.

The powertrain remains unchanged, delivering 83 kW as in the ë-C3 Aircross Standard Range. This allows a top speed of 143 kph, with a maximum towing capacity of a modest 550 kilograms. There are no changes to the bodywork, meaning the ë-C3 Aircross Extended-Range offers the same practicality as before.

The ë-C3 Aircross Extended-Range is now available for order in Germany, starting at €30,690. The variant with the smaller 44 kWh battery (300 kilometres WLTP range) continues to start at €26,490. In practice, however, the price difference is smaller: the ë-C3 Aircross with the smaller battery is also offered in the basic “YOU” trim, while the Extended-Range model is only available from the “PLUS” trim – costing exactly €2,000 more than the Standard-Range model in this specification.

“With the ë-C3 Aircross Extended-Range, we are once again proving that electric mobility is accessible to all,” says Thomas Goldboom, Managing Director of Citroën Germany. “Especially in the B-SUV segment, our customers expect maximum everyday usability. We now offer them a range of over 400 kilometres at the best price in this segment. With this additional flexibility in electric range, Citroën shows that we are democratising electromobility without compromising on comfort and design.”
