Chevron is preparing to begin drilling the Korikori-1 exploration well later this month, according to Suriname’s state-owned oil company Staatsolie. The well is located about 78 km offshore in the north-central section of Block 5, in approximately 40 m of water. Chevron operates the block with a 40% interest, alongside Paradise Oil Company (POC, 40%) and QatarEnergy (20%).
Suriname’s National Environmental Authority (NMA) granted Chevron a drilling permit at the end of July 2025. The Noble Regina Allen jack-up rig is expected to arrive in early October to begin operations. Drilling is expected to last around 90 days and will target potential hydrocarbon accumulations in the shallow offshore zone of the Suriname-Guyana basin. Upon completion, well data will be analyzed to assess the presence, quality, and potential quantity of hydrocarbons.
The Korikori-1 campaign represents a significant step in Suriname’s ongoing offshore exploration effort, following several successful deepwater discoveries in neighboring blocks. Block 5 spans approximately 2,200 km² in water depths ranging from 30 to 60 m and lies between 45 and 82 km offshore, north of the Nickerie district in western Suriname.
Chevron’s drilling operations will be supported by Surinamese shore-base logistics, including fuel, supplies, and personnel transport from Paramaribo. Staatsolie noted that the campaign will enhance local content participation, creating opportunities for Surinamese contractors and suppliers to engage in offshore support services.
The results of Korikori-1 are expected to further define the hydrocarbon potential of Suriname’s shallow-water acreage, complementing ongoing exploration and appraisal activity across the wider Suriname–Guyana Basin, one of the most closely watched frontier regions in global offshore exploration.
