Once captured, the carbon dioxide will be liquefied and transported via ship for permanent storage under the North Sea – this use of a shipping solution draws on the company’s extensive maritime heritage and over 200 years of operating on the River Thames.
Dougie Sutherland, CEO of Cory, said, “Today marks a pivotal moment for Cory, for London, and for the UK. This will be the UK’s largest waste-to-energy with CCS (WECCS) project, which will make a material contribution to London’s decarbonisation efforts by capturing c. 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 a year.”
“The Independent Review of Greenhouse Gas Removals, published last month, highlights the vital role that WECCS will play in hitting the country’s decarbonisation targets. This project will create high quality engineered carbon removals whilst also delivering an essential public service for our communities.
“It is also the most advanced non-pipeline transportation CCS project in the UK. By using ships to transport the carbon that we capture we are not only making use of London’s ‘green highway’, the River Thames, but also opening up decarbonisation pathways for other emitters, ensuring that geography is no barrier to decarbonisation.
“This is a project designed for London, but its impact will resonate far beyond the city. It demonstrates that ambition and investment can support the UK’s clean growth and jobs ambitions.”
