Boomitra Launches Biomass Carbon Removal Project in Botswana to Restore Land and Lock Away Carbon

Boomitra announces its first Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) project outside of soil carbon, targeting 10,000 hectares of degraded land in Botswana

The project will remove woody bush encroachment, sequester 200,000+ tonnes of CO₂, and scale to 1 million hectares across Southern Africa

Local partnerships with Brahmans Botswana and Namibia Resource Consultants will support implementation, land restoration, and rural job creation

Boomitra, the Earthshot Prize-winning carbon removal company, has launched its first Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) initiative in Botswana, marking an expansion beyond its leading soil carbon work. The Oasis Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage Project addresses a major land degradation issue—woody bush encroachment—by transforming invasive biomass into a durable carbon sink while restoring critical grazing lands.

Turning land degradation into a climate solution

Bush encroachment is a widespread problem in Botswana, where woody plant overgrowth reduces biodiversity, lowers livestock productivity, and increases fire risk. Boomitra’s solution removes this encroaching biomass, seals it into dense bales, and buries it underground in oxygen-free conditions—storing carbon for over 100 years.

“This is a natural evolution for Boomitra,” said Aadith Moorthy, Founder and CEO of Boomitra. “We’ve built a strong track record managing complex soil carbon projects in over 10 countries. Now we’re applying that operational expertise to a new, high-integrity removal pathway—one that can solve a real problem for ranchers and landowners across Southern Africa. This is just the beginning.”

The project will restore 10,000 hectares in its first 10-year phase, permanently removing more than 200,000 tonnes of CO₂, and is designed to scale to over 1 million hectares across the region.

Durable, verifiable, and scalable removal

The project follows BiCRS best practices and has passed a Preliminary Assessment with Puro.Earth, a leading standard for durable carbon removal. Boomitra will implement robust traceability and monitoring, including greenhouse gas flux measurement with soil gas chambers to ensure integrity over time.

Boomitra’s approach is low-tech, energy-efficient, and deployable in remote areas, making it especially suitable for Global South contexts. The company has already launched large-scale soil carbon projects in Argentina, Mexico, and beyond.

The biomass burial process avoids emissions from decomposition or burning while restoring savanna ecosystems, improving soil productivity, and creating rural jobs.

Local partners driving impact on the ground

The Oasis project is being implemented in partnership with Brahmans Botswana, a livestock and land restoration company, and Namibia Resource Consultants, which specializes in regenerative agriculture and bush control. These organizations bring critical local knowledge and networks to support long-term success.

“Our bush densities have now reached the point where it can no longer be ignored, and the bush-to-grass balance needs to be restored,” said Sheldon Barnes of Brahmans Botswana. “Partnering with Boomitra allows us to turn a regional challenge into a long-term opportunity for the land and the communities that depend on it.”

Boomitra’s move into BiCRS complements its leadership in soil carbon, where the company already works with over 100,000 farmers and ranchers across 8 projects in 10 countries, covering 5 million acres.

“We’ve always believed that carbon removal should solve problems for people and ecosystems, not just remove carbon,” said Moorthy. “That’s what makes this project so powerful. It restores degraded lands, supports rural livelihoods, and permanently removes carbon from the atmosphere.”
