After months of corporate courtship and NDA-flavored flirtation, LexisNexis and legal startup Harvey are finally putting a label on it: they’ve launched a “strategic alliance.”The partnership lets Harvey users who also subscribe to LexisNexis access its deep trove of legal content and citations directly within Harvey’s app — a hookup that strengthens Harvey’s claim as the go-to provider of legal software. The integration launches later this year.Harvey’s software assists lawyers with legal drafting and review. However, its product had a gaping hole. It provided users with access to public case law databases but not LexisNexis or Westlaw, which control a…
Artificial intelligence’s impact is so big that even the people building it aren’t safe.Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said AI will change the tech giant’s workflow and generate “efficiency gains” that will ultimately “reduce our total corporate workforce.”Put more bluntly: AI means we’ll need less of you to keep things running. The message wasn’t well received by many Amazon employees, BI’s Eugene Kim reports. “There is nothing more motivating on a Tuesday than reading that your job will be replaced by AI in a few years,” one person wrote in an internal Slack channel viewed by Eugene.Tech executives haven’t been shy about…

Tokyo Gas, the biggest city gas supplier in Japan, doesn’t import LNG from Middle Eastern exporters so its supply of the super-chilled fuel is not being directly impacted by the Israel-Iran conflict, a top executive said on Wednesday. Japan is the world’s second-biggest LNG importer after China. Fears have mounted on the energy markets that the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran could lead to disruption of oil and gas supply in case of direct hits on export infrastructure or a blockade of the vital shipping lane the Strait of Hormuz. “Since we don’t import LNG from Qatar or UAE, our LNG procurement…

Antarctic seal numbers falling drastically due to melting sea ice, research shows | Sea ice
Antarctic seal populations are drastically declining as the sea ice melts around them, new research has shown.Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have been monitoring the seal population in the sub-Antarctic since the 1970s, looking in particular at three different seal species in the sub-Antarctic on Signy Island: Weddell seals, Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals.Using satellite records from as far back as 1982, the research team compared annual changes in sea ice concentration with seal population counts conducted since 1977. With five decades worth of data spanning a period of long-term warming and temporary cooling between 1998…

(Oil Price) – Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney faces his first real challenge to Canadian unity amid a soured relationship with the long-time trade partner and ally, the United States. A movement to secede from Canada is growing in the oil-rich province of Alberta, which contributes a large part to Canadian economy and budget and has the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita among Canadian provinces. Alberta could hold a referendum to leave Canada next year if a citizen-led petition gathers the requisite number of signatures requesting such a question to be put to a referendum. Danielle Smith, the Premier of…
