The government of Mozambique has entered two strategic agreements that, if finalized, would result in construction of the country’s first crude oil refinery, as well as a grassroots pipeline for delivery of petroleum-based products from the southeast African coastal republic to neighboring Zambia. Identified as agreements of “high-strategic importance,” the two memorandums of understanding (MOU) for development of the refinery and pipeline projects were signed in Maputo between May 7-8 during the 11th Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference (MMEC), which brought together key government representatives, energy companies, local stakeholders, development partners, service providers, and other investors to accelerate mining and…
For the first time, the growth in China’s clean power generation has caused the nation’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to fall despite rapid power demand growth. The new analysis for Carbon Brief shows that China’s emissions were down 1.6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025 and by 1% in the latest 12 months. Electricity supply from new wind, solar and nuclear capacity was enough to cut coal-power output even as demand surged, whereas previous falls were due to weak growth. The analysis, based on official figures and commercial data, shows that China’s CO2 emissions have now been stable, or…
For over two years, OPEC and its partners from Central Asia, led by Russia, tried to push oil prices higher by withholding oil supply. Some did it more successfully than others. Saudi Arabia especially excelled at curbing supply—to no avail. Factors outside OPEC+’s control caused prices to slide lower and stay lower. And OPEC+ has now come to terms with this, it seems. For the time being.“You can’t scream into the storm forever,” Bill Farren-Price, senior research fellow at the Oxford Energy Institute, told the Financial Times this week. “They’re good at tweaking and fine-tuning balances, but they can’t push…
(Investing) – LONDON – OPEC on Wednesday trimmed its forecast for growth in oil supply from the United States and other producers outside the wider OPEC+ group this year and said it expected lower capital spending following a decline in oil prices. Supply from countries outside the Declaration of Cooperation – the formal name for OPEC+ – will rise by about 800,000 barrels per day in 2025, OPEC said in a monthly report, down from last month’s forecast of 900,000 bpd. A slowdown in supply growth outside OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus Russia and other…
McDermott has successfully completed fabrication, construction, and offshore floatover of the Scarborough floating production unit (FPU) topside and hull structures for Woodside Energy. The contract, awarded in 2021, followed the successful delivery of front-end engineering design for the Scarborough Energy Project’s FPU and includes engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) services. McDermott is delivering design, fabrication, integration, transportation and installation of an approximately 30,000-metric-ton topside and 37,000-metric-ton hull structure, making it the largest floating production facility the company has ever designed and built, and one of the largest semisubmersible production platforms built in offshore history. Topsides fabrication was…
Running a multibillion-dollar company often requires lots of early mornings. For Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, however, much of his work gets done late at night. The 43-year-old is leading his company through a major redesign that enables users to book services on Airbnb in addition to stays. Chesky spent his Thanksgiving holiday weekend working on a 10,000-word plan to bring his vision to life and revising it to 1,500 words over the span of a few days, he recently told Wired. There’s a good chance that the plan came together at least partly in the late hours of the night. The billionaire…
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he’ll consider altering environmental regulations passed by his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, in order to facilitate investment in major projects in Canada, including oil and gas pipelines. “We will change things at the federal level that need to be changed in order for projects to move forward,” Carney told CTV News in an interview that aired Tuesday, shortly after his new cabinet was sworn into office. Asked if those changes might apply to C-69 — legislation that created new rules for environmental assessments — or to a proposed cap on oil and gas industry emissions, he replied: “Absolutely it could…
Exxon Mobil Corp. plans to invest $1.5 billion in a deepwater oil field in Nigeria as Africa’s top producer looks to boost output, according to the nation’s regulator. The investment, expected within the next two years, will focus on reviving production in the Usan field and is in addition to funding earmarked for planned developments in Owowo and Erha, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission said in a statement Tuesday, citing a visit by Shane Harris, Exxon’s managing director in Nigeria. The producer aims to reach oil output of 2.4 million barrels a day after dropping to less than half of that…
(Oil Price) – The Permian Basin has been the star of the U.S. shale oil and gas industry for years. But this star is, at least for the time being, dimming as production costs rise with the natural depletion of top-quality acreage. But there is another formation that could take up the torch from the Permian. And it’s in Canada. The Montney Formation in Western Canada spans Alberta and British Columbia is one of the largest natural gas deposits on the continent. It also has some rather solid crude oil resources—and some of the lowest production costs in the industry. “The primary benefit of Canadian…
