The European Commission has claimed the European Union is on course to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55 percent by 2030 relative to 1990 as targeted by the European Climate Law, though it said efforts need to go beyond existing policies. The Commission noted Belgium, Estonia and Poland had yet to submit their final NECPs. Member stated had been given a deadline of June 2024 to file their final NECPs. “Based on an analysis of Member States’ projections in the submitted…

A German appeals court has dismissed the case of a Peruvian farmer suing the energy giant RWE for climate damages. The upper regional court in Hamm rejected the argument by the farmer and mountain guide Saúl Luciano Lliuya that his home was at direct risk of being washed away by a glacial flood.Lliuya initially filed a case against RWE in 2015, backed by the non-profit Germanwatch, to make the company contribute to local flood defences in line with its share of planet-heating pollution. The German electricity company is one of the world’s biggest greenhouse gas polluters but has never operated in…
You’d be hard pressed to find a company out there that’s not using some form of AI at this point. In just a few years, tech leaders say the same will be true of quantum computing. “It’s equivalent to the exact thing that you’re seeing with classical computing and AI, but it’s going to happen at a much larger scale,” Jay Gambetta, the vice president in charge of IBM’s quantum initiative, told Business Insider.Researchers are optimistic about coming breakthroughs in quantum computing, a field that leverages quantum physics and mechanics to solve complex problems faster than is possible using classical…

The Trump administration will grant Chevron the right to keep its operations in Venezuela after its sanction waiver expires in June, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal reported separately, citing unnamed sources.According to the sources, Chevron would be able to retain its assets in Venezuela, but would not be able to export oil from the country to the United States. The WSJ wrote that this would reduce the risk of the Venezuelan state seizing the assets while giving Chevron the opportunity to go back to normal operations in case bilateral relations between Caracas and Washington ever improve. Besides the ban…
Much résumé advice and job interview prep centers on highlighting your tangibles — your hard skills, your certifications, your project outcomes, your deliverables. Just about anything you can stick a number or percentage on.While focusing on more concrete skills, soft skills can get left out of the conversation. But they shouldn’t be, said Irmgard Naudin ten Cate, EY’s global talent attraction and acquisition leader.Soft skills can be particularly useful for new graduates and young professionals who are starting their careers and working toward technical mastery in their fields. Wherever you are in your career, anyone who’s ever worked with other…
Artificial intelligence is a bit like constructing office buildings. For months or years, the ground has been a big hole, and it looks like nothing’s happening. Then, suddenly, the steel framework goes up, followed by the walls and windows. The bit we all see often takes a lot less time. The foundation work below ground takes ages, and without that, the building won’t stand. In AI, crucial building blocks take years, or even decades, to emerge. Many of these are not visible to end users, but without this technical foundation, AI products don’t work.Google has almost all these building blocks. Microsoft, Amazon,…
Venture firms are normally in the business of backing high-flying tech startups, so many in the industry were scratching their heads when General Catalyst bought a chain of hospitals. The San Francisco-based firm spun out a separate healthcare unit, dubbed the Health Assurance Transformation Company or HATCo, in 2023 to buy Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health the following year. GC committed about $1 billion over seven years for the acquisition from the firm’s balance sheet, outside its typical fund structure. The deal was perplexing. Healthcare rarely delivers the kinds of sky-high returns that define venture success; even within GC’s own $36 billion portfolio,…
