Apple, MP Materials Sign $500M Deal for U.S.-Made Recycled Rare Earth Magnets

$500M Partnership: Apple will source 100% recycled rare earth magnets from MP Materials’ U.S. facilities, advancing circular manufacturing.

U.S. Supply Chain Boost: Magnets will be produced in Texas using recycled materials processed in California, reinforcing domestic capabilities.

Sustainability and Scale: Dedicated recycling line and expanded production will support hundreds of millions of Apple devices starting in 2027.

MP Materials and Apple have signed a $500 million, long-term supply agreement that will enable Apple to use rare earth magnets manufactured entirely in the United States from 100% recycled materials.

Under the deal, MP Materials will supply magnets produced at its Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas, using recycled rare earth feedstock processed at its Mountain Pass site in California. The feedstock will be derived from post-industrial and end-of-life magnets—an important step in establishing a circular supply chain for critical materials.

“For nearly five years, Apple and MP Materials have been piloting advanced recycling technology that enables recycled rare earth magnets to be processed into material that meets Apple’s exacting standards for performance and design,” the companies stated.

MP Materials will now scale this effort by building a commercial recycling line at Mountain Pass capable of processing magnet scrap and components from discarded products. This marks a milestone in Apple’s ongoing sustainability strategy and MP’s commitment to restoring the rare earth supply chain within the U.S.

To meet Apple’s growing demand and fulfill its obligations under a separate public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, MP will significantly expand production capacity at its Fort Worth facility. Magnet shipments are expected to begin in 2027 and scale to support hundreds of millions of Apple devices annually.

The partnership also includes a shared commitment to innovation. MP and Apple will jointly develop new technologies to enhance magnet production and improve recovery from end-of-life devices.

“We are proud to partner with Apple to launch MP’s recycling platform and scale up our magnetics business,” said James Litinsky, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of MP Materials. “This collaboration deepens our vertical integration, strengthens supply chain resilience, and reinforces America’s industrial capacity at a pivotal moment.”

Rare earth magnets are critical components in a wide range of technologies—from smartphones and computers to electric vehicles, robotics, and energy systems. By sourcing recycled materials domestically, Apple and MP aim to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and set a new global benchmark for sustainable magnet production.
