American Petroleum Institute strengthens requirements for steel casing and tubing

The American Petroleum Institute (API) this week announced the publication of an Addendum to the 11th edition of the API 5CT, Casing and Tubing. The update strengthens the requirements for the manufacture of steel casing and tubing used in oil and gas drilling and production operations, enhancing safety, environmental protection and operational integrity.

Evolving with industry needs

The Addendum builds on the 11th edition of API 5CT, released in December 2023, which detailed guidelines for pipe sizes, masses, wall thicknesses, material grades and end-finishes of casing and tubing. It addresses the industry’s emerging challenges and technological advancements, with key enhancements that include:

Addition of a provision for ‘high collapse’ products with enhanced performance ratings
Addition of new pipe grade C125<
Addition of requirements for end sizing and thermal recovery
Clarification of end drifting for product end-sized or with installed couplings
Clarification of retesting welded products when a failed flattening test occurs
Correction of errors that occurred between the 10th and 11th editions

Global alignment with sustainable development

The Addendum to the 11th edition of API 5CT reinforces the role of casing and tubing as primary and secondary containment barriers, which maintain the integrity of hydrocarbons and other fluids within the intended flow path during both well construction and well production operations. By ensuring the consistency and quality of key products, the standard directly contributes to operational integrity and environmental protection.
