(World Oil) – Alaska LNG, majority owned and developed by Glenfarne, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with JERA, Japan’s largest power generation company, for the long-term supply of one million tonnes per annum (MMtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Alaska LNG Project.
The 20-year offtake agreement, on a Free-on-Board basis, strengthens Japan’s LNG supply security while advancing the only federally authorized LNG export project on the U.S. Pacific Coast.
JERA strengthens LNG supply security with Alaska LNG
The 20-MTPA Alaska LNG project is a joint venture between Glenfarne and the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC). Since acquiring a 75% ownership stake in March 2025, Glenfarne has accelerated commercial progress, securing preliminary agreements covering more than half of Alaska LNG’s third-party offtake capacity. This includes agreements with CPC in Taiwan and PTT in Thailand, with negotiations underway to advance them into binding contracts.
With JERA now onboard, Glenfarne is in discussions with additional potential buyers for LNG volumes exceeding the project’s total capacity, highlighting strong demand for U.S. LNG in the Asia-Pacific market.
Glenfarne: Momentum across Asia-Pacific LNG markets
Brendan Duval, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Glenfarne, said:
“Our agreement with JERA, one of the leading LNG companies in the world, follows months of committed discussions on both sides to open a new and diversified energy supply that strengthens energy security and spurs long-term economic growth for both Alaska and Japan. I am grateful for our partnership and collaboration as Glenfarne builds on this momentum with commercial parties across the Pacific region.”
Adam Prestidge, president of Glenfarne Alaska LNG, LLC, added:
“We welcome this LOI with JERA as we add to the long and storied LNG history between Japan and Alaska. Alaska LNG’s economic and strategic competitive advantages, including the shortest U.S. shipping proximity to Asia and abundant, low-volatility North Slope gas reserves, are propelling our commercial progress.”
U.S. leadership and energy security
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright welcomed the announcement:
“Today’s agreement by JERA and Glenfarne is another important step forward for the Alaska LNG project. Alaska LNG will not only be one of the greatest energy infrastructure projects in our nation’s history, but also provides enormous energy security to the United States and our allies.”
One of the lowest-carbon LNG projects globally
Alaska LNG is designed to be among the lowest-carbon LNG projects worldwide. A Department of Energy analysis found it could cut global CO₂ emissions by up to 77 million tonnes per year by displacing coal use in Asia and reducing shipping emissions due to Alaska’s proximity to Asian markets.
Phased development strategy targets 2025–2026 FIDs
Glenfarne is advancing Alaska LNG under a phased development strategy:
Phase One will build a domestic pipeline to deliver North Slope gas to Alaskans, reducing risk and strengthening local energy security.
Phase Two will add the LNG export terminal and supporting infrastructure.
With favorable shipping economics, Alaska LNG can export LNG to Asia at materially lower delivered costs compared to U.S. Gulf Coast projects. Glenfarne is targeting a late-2025 Final Investment Decision (FID) for the pipeline and a 2026 FID for LNG export facilities.
Glenfarne’s North American LNG portfolio
In addition to Alaska LNG, Glenfarne is developing LNG export capacity in Texas and Louisiana, bringing its total permitted North American LNG portfolio to 32.8 MMtpa.
