ABB has signed a term sheet agreement with SwitcH2 to engineer and supply automation and electrification solutions for a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel designed to produce green ammonia from renewable power.

The FPSO, which will be stationed off the coast of Portugal, will feature a 300-MW electrolyzer capable of producing up to 243,000 metric tons of green ammonia per year. Powered by certified renewable electricity purchased under a Power Purchase Agreement, the facility will play a role in meeting the growing global demand for low-carbon marine fuels.

Under the agreement, ABB intends to deliver a prefabricated eHouse, electrical distribution systems, and its ABB Ability™ System 800xA® Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) with full cybersecurity integration. The modular systems are designed to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient offshore operations, integrating seamlessly with third-party electrolyzers and ammonia synthesis units.

“This collaboration represents a key step in advancing offshore production capabilities for next-generation marine fuels,” said Saskia Kunst, CEO of SwitcH2. “By integrating ABB’s advanced electrification and automation systems, we are demonstrating how technology-driven partnerships can accelerate innovation, shaping the future of energy at sea.”

ABB’s Energy Industries division president, Per Erik Holsten, said the partnership underscores ABB’s commitment to decarbonization. “Green ammonia offers a technically viable method for decarbonizing marine transport,” he said. “This FPSO concept showcases how renewable energy can be leveraged to unlock low-carbon energy value chains.”

Front-end engineering and design (FEED) work is expected to continue through mid-2026, with final investment decision (FID) anticipated in the third quarter of 2026 and construction scheduled for 2027.
