Trendsetter installs tethered BOP for deepwater U.S. Gulf well stability

(WO) – Trendsetter Vulcan Offshore (TVO) has deployed a tethered blowout preventer (TBOP) system in the U.S. Gulf, applying a modified version of its Hercules™ technology to address wellhead fatigue challenges in soft seabed conditions.

The system was installed during a completion project in approximately 4,000 ft of water, where seabed conditions posed an elevated risk of cyclic loading on the wellhead. The tethered configuration is designed to stabilize the BOP stack and transfer loads away from the wellhead, reducing fatigue and improving overall system integrity during operations.

TVO’s TBOP system uses four polyethylene tethers anchored to suction pile foundations on the seafloor. The design helps control BOP motion above the wellhead, particularly in environments where dynamic positioning and vessel movement can introduce additional stress.

Originally developed to enable deepwater floaters with dynamic positioning to operate safely in shallower environments, the Hercules system has been adapted for a range of subsea conditions. In this case, modifications were made to accommodate the soft seabed and manage higher-than-normal fatigue loading.

The deployment allowed completion activities to proceed on a well that otherwise presented increased operational risk due to formation and seabed characteristics.

“Exacting subsea environments require safe and reliable solutions, and TVO is meeting that need with tailored systems developed from proven designs,” said Jim Maher, President of TVO.

Trendsetter said the project demonstrates how established subsea technologies can be adapted to address site-specific challenges, particularly in deepwater environments where wellhead fatigue and stability remain key considerations.

The company’s tethered BOP systems have been applied across multiple offshore regions, including the Gulf, North Sea and Australasia, supporting drilling and completion operations in complex subsea environments.
