Global delivery giant FedEx announced the launch of a new reusable packaging system aimed at enabling B2B shippers to move away from single-use packaging, reduce waste, and cut carbon emissions.
The new system was developed in collaboration with logistics-focused reusable packaging provider Returnity. Founded in 2016, New York-based Returnity develops reusable packaging systems for logistics, retail and e-commerce supply chains. These solutions are designed to replace disposable packaging materials and enable circular logistics, where packaging is reused multiple times rather of discarded after a single shipment.
Mike Newman, CEO of Returnity, said:
“FedEx made reuse make sense by building the business case, doing the work, and creating a model for how circular logistics can succeed at scale.”
According to FedEx, the new system utilizes a reusable box designed to provide a durable, collapsible, and automation-friendly container that works within the current FedEx infrastructure. The company said that the solution is designed for closed-loop environments, and well-suited for in-house fulfillment centers, store restocking, or field service support, where returns and reuse are controlled and predictable.
The new box is engineered to withstand up to 50 shipping cycles, cutting packaging spending by up to 30% per cycle, and reducing carbon emissions by as much as 64%–88% compared to single-use corrugated packaging under typical conditions.
FedEx said that the system has been successfully piloted with multiple B2B shippers across North America, supporting applications including fulfillment-to-store replenishment, internal transfers and reverse logistics, the company said. The company said that shippers in the pilot program reported faster unpacking and restocking, increased labor efficiency, improved backroom organization, and lower product damage rates.
Neil Gibson, Senior Vice President, Global Customer Experience at FedEx, said:
“In collaboration with Returnity, we have created the first scalable, reusable box solution for B2B customers, which is especially useful for our soft-goods shippers. By pairing Returnity’s durable, easy-to-integrate packaging with our global network, we’re helping retailers unlock meaningful cost savings while reducing environmental impact, all without sacrificing speed or reliability.”
The new system is currently available in the U.S., with plans to expand internationally in Australia and Europe in the near future.
