US President Donald Trump once again on Tuesday rocked the tariff boat in relation to India, saying that the Indian Prime Minister is “not happy with me” due to the tariffs imposed on the country for its purchase of Russian oil.
“I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because you know they’re paying a lot of tariffs now because they’re not doing the oil, but they are, they’ve now reduced it very substantially, as you know, from Russia,” Trump said, as per a PTI report.
The US leader was delivering remarks at the House GOP Member Retreat, where he also claimed that “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please’. Yes.”
In 2025, the White House imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian goods, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil as a key reason. This move has strained India–US trade relation, although the two countries are engaged in finalising the trade deal.
