Rockwell Automation has released a new report highlighting artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cybersecurity as leading drivers of digital transformation across the global oil and gas sector. The study, Oil and Gas Technology Outlook for 2030 and Beyond—commissioned from GlobalData—finds that rapid technology adoption is reshaping operations from exploration to refining.

According to the report, more than half of surveyed industry leaders say digital technologies such as cloud computing, AI, and automation are already disrupting traditional operations. Predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, and advanced analytics are helping producers reduce downtime, enhance safety, and improve asset reliability amid mounting environmental and supply chain challenges.
Rockwell Automation notes that artificial intelligence is emerging as the central innovation engine, with industrywide spending expected to reach $18.5 billion by 2028. Integration of AI with digital twins, edge computing, and immersive training platforms is enabling smarter decision-making and improved operational efficiency. The report also emphasizes the growing importance of robust cybersecurity strategies and digital-first workforce training to sustain long-term transformation.
“The convergence of information and operational technology is redefining how energy companies operate,” said Fabio Mielli, strategic business developer at Rockwell Automation. “By aligning advanced digital tools with measurable production outcomes, the industry can enhance resilience and agility for the future.”
