Abu Dhabi Mobility, an affiliate of the UAE’s Department of Municipalities and Transport, has just announced a large investment in new EV infrastructure. It includes the installation of 1,000 new charging points at 400 locations, including key strategic locations such as hotels and shopping centres.
Abu Dhabi Mobility has not disclosed how large the investment is, but states that “a number of operators have been appointed to manage EV charging stations under public-private partnership (PPP) contracts” covering the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of chargers across Abu Dhabi.
This includes the installation of chargers at 400 locations across Abu Dhabi Island, the Al Ain region and the Al Dhafra region, with each station operating under the brand name Charge AD. There’ll be standardised charging tariffs of AED 0.70 p/kWh for AC charging and AED 1.20p/kWh for DC charging at these locations. Additional chargers will likely be installed in other public locations such as shopping centres, hotels and elsewhere through partnerships with the scheme, although none have yet been confirmed.
Dr Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, said: “We believe that the establishment of a unified and extensive electric vehicle charging network is a fundamental pillar in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and enabling a smarter, more sustainable community. This supports Abu Dhabi’s vision of a future with reduced emissions and greater energy efficiency.”
According to the agency, Abu Dhabi has seen more than 15,000 EVs registered during Q1 of 2025 – a 60 per cent increase over the same period last year. The city outlined a policy in 2022 which aims for 50 per cent of the country’s vehicles to be electric by 2040, and covers end-to-end principles for EV adoption including vehicle ownership, electricity supply, pricing and charging.
