Petrol Up 8.77%, LPG Surges 13.43% in May 2025, ET EnergyWorld


New Delhi: India’s consumption of petrol and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rose sharply in May 2025, while diesel and jet fuel (ATF) recorded moderate growth, according to provisional data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

Petrol consumption rose 8.77 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 3,767 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) in May 2025, compared to 3,463 TMT in the same month last year. Diesel consumption rose to 8,571 TMT, marking a 1.89 per cent increase from 8,412 TMT in May 2024.

LPG demand recorded the highest YoY growth among key fuels, increasing by 13.43 per cent to 2,792 TMT in May 2025, from 2,461 TMT a year earlier. Jet fuel (ATF) consumption stood at 775 TMT, up 4.17 per cent from 744 TMT in May 2024.

On a cumulative basis, petrol consumption in the first two months of FY26 (April–May) rose 7.0 per cent to 7,216 TMT from 6,747 TMT in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Diesel usage increased to 16,847 TMT, compared to 16,337 TMT in April–May 2024, reflecting a 3.1 per cent growth.

ATF consumption reached 1,547 TMT during the same period, registering a 4.1 per cent rise from 1,486 TMT. LPG usage during April–May stood at 5,413 TMT, up 10.1 per cent from 4,916 TMT a year ago.

Compared to May 2019, petrol consumption in May 2025 was up 37.7 per cent. Diesel consumption rose by 9.4 per cent, while ATF and LPG recorded increases of 13.9 per cent and 36.8 per cent respectively.

The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for petrol stood at -5.46 per cent over six years, while LPG grew at 5.37 per cent, ATF at 2.22 per cent and diesel at 1.08 per cent.
