At Canadian producer Imperial Oil, a company majority-owned by U.S. supermajor ExxonMobil, digital initiatives have already delivered impressive financial gains. Cheryl Gomez-Smith, Senior Vice-President at Imperial Oil’s upstream division, highlighted during the company’s recent Investor Day call that these advancements have generated a cumulative annual value of US$500 million (C$700 million) as of 2024. Looking ahead, the projection is even more ambitious, with digitalization expected to unlock more than US$860 million (C$1.2 billion) in annual value by 2027.

Gomez-Smith emphasized the dual benefits of these technological deployments. “We have successfully integrated various robotics and drone technologies, including our fully autonomous truck fleet,” she stated. “This automated fleet dramatically enhances safety by removing workers from potentially hazardous environments, while simultaneously driving significant efficiencies in work execution.” Furthermore, Imperial Oil is expanding its generative AI capabilities, allowing operational teams to interact directly with their proprietary data. This empowers personnel to gain real-time insights, facilitating faster and more informed decision-making across their extensive assets.

Robotic Sentinels and Autonomous Fleets in Action

Imperial Oil’s Cold Lake bitumen project in Canada, one of the world’s largest thermal in-situ operations, serves as a prime example of this technological integration. Here, the company has deployed two “Spot” robot dogs, developed by Boston Dynamics, to conduct routine inspections and surveillance. Imperial Oil estimates that these robotic sentinels can perform nearly 70% of certain operator rounds, a crucial advancement that allows the company to reallocate valuable operator and maintenance resources to higher-value, more complex tasks. The firm anticipates taking delivery of two additional Spot units this quarter, signaling further expansion of this innovative program.

Another specialized robot, named “Holly,” autonomously performs detailed truck and undercarriage inspections at Imperial Oil’s Kearl project. This is complemented by the trucks themselves being refueled autonomously, creating a seamless, highly efficient operational loop. Drones are also becoming integral at Cold Lake, currently on the verge of full AI enablement. These aerial platforms are poised to deliver substantial savings by optimizing pump jack maintenance schedules, improving operator utilization rates, and significantly reducing the incidence of spills.

ExxonMobil’s Frontier in Autonomous Drilling and Permian Optimization

The technological prowess extends to Imperial Oil’s parent company, ExxonMobil, which is setting new industry benchmarks. The U.S. supermajor proudly asserts its position as the first in the industry to successfully implement autonomous drilling technology in challenging deepwater environments. ExxonMobil has developed a proprietary drilling advisory system, which is currently deployed in its critical offshore Guyana operations. This advanced system leverages AI to precisely determine the ideal parameters for drilling, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Critically, it also enables closed-loop automation, allowing the drilling process to be controlled with minimal direct human intervention, enhancing both speed and accuracy.

Closer to home, ExxonMobil is also harnessing the power of AI and machine learning to supercharge efficiency within its prolific Permian Basin operations. This represents an initial but pivotal step towards the potential for fully automated, lights-out operations in one of the world’s most vital shale plays, promising even greater cost reductions and production optimization in the future.
