New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his assessment of his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
During the call, Modi reiterated India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and underlined support for all efforts towards this end. The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation, the statement said.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come.”
The leaders also reviewed bilateral ties, including defence and energy. India remains a major buyer of Russian defence equipment and, in recent years, Russia has emerged as the top supplier of crude oil to India, meeting about 36 per cent of its imports.
The call came days after US President Trump and Putin met in Alaska on August 15 to discuss the Ukraine conflict but failed to reach a deal. Following the meeting, Trump said he would push for a full peace accord rather than a ceasefire, arguing that ceasefire agreements “often times do not hold up.”
Ministry of External Affairs had welcomed the Alaska meeting, saying that the way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. “The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the ministry said.>
