Nearly 240,000 tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste eliminated since 2019, with over 253,000 tonnes recycled or repurposed.
Strategy 2030 to focus on large-scale, high-impact programmes in India, Indonesia, and South Africa, each backed by at least US$100 million in financing.
Priority initiatives will address systemic barriers to plastics circularity, starting with difficult-to-recycle flexible plastics.
The Alliance to End Plastic Waste has released its Progress Report 2024: Evolving for Impact, highlighting measurable progress over five years and unveiling its Strategy 2030 for scaling solutions toward a circular plastics economy.
Since 2019, Alliance-backed initiatives have diverted 239,985 tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste from the environment and recovered 253,212 tonnes for recycling or other uses. These projects have also generated 2,134 formal jobs and attracted US$610.89 million in external funding commitments.
“As we mark five years of action, our focus is sharper than ever,” said Jacob Duer, President and CEO of the Alliance. “Our Strategy 2030 builds on those lessons, and we are doubling down on what works to drive greater impact at scale.”

The new strategy shifts the Alliance’s approach from numerous smaller projects to fewer, integrated programmes—either country-specific, aligned with national priorities, or thematic, addressing persistent global challenges. The initial focus will be on India, Indonesia, and South Africa, each targeted for more than US$100 million in combined financing.

“By aligning industries, governments, and communities around proven solutions, we can accelerate real, global progress toward ending plastic waste,” said Tracey Campbell, Chair of the Board.
The Alliance will also prioritise systemic issues, starting with flexible plastics, which are notoriously challenging to recycle. To support this, it will expand the use of blended finance and public-private partnerships to unlock large-scale investment in waste management and recycling infrastructure.
With its strengthened focus, the Alliance aims to drive transformative change, combining technical innovation, capacity building, and financial leverage to accelerate global progress toward eliminating plastic waste.
